Book review - The incredible history of India's geography.
"The Incredible History of India's Geography" by Sanjeev Sanyal offers a wonderful and captivating exploration of India's history through the lens of its geography. The book diverges from traditional historical narratives by emphasizing the profound influence of geography on the development of Indian civilization. It traces India's story from its geological origins, including tectonic plate movements and climate changes, to its present-day form. Intertwining Geography and Historical Events enhances the flavour of story telling. Sanyal demonstrates how geographical features, such as rivers, mountains, and coastlines, have shaped migration patterns, trade routes, and the rise and fall of empires. It explores how these geographical factors influenced significant historical events, including the development of ancient civilizations, the movements of various dynasties, and the formation of modern India.
The book covers a vast historical timeline, encompassing ancient civilizations like the Harappan, the Maurya and Gupta empires, and the Mughal era, leading up to the modern era. It gives insight into how the land itself, has been a major player in the historical events. A typical example could be the description of the migration of the lion in the subcontinent and eventual adaptation as the royal symbol and further explanation of the origin of the singhalese.
Sanyal employs a lively and accessible writing style, incorporating anecdotes and historical facts to make the subject matter engaging for a wide audience. The book is designed to make the yound reader understand the importance of geography in the understanding of Indian history.
The book attempts to give a different view of how history is normally told, by including the geographical facts that have helped form the history. I enjoyed the book throughout and found it easy to read. It also is a handy quick reference to information about my land and my origin.
