Discordant Humor - Notes

The dynamics of humor can be significantly impacted by differences in educational backgrounds. When people with varying levels or types of education interact, their senses of humor might clash, leading to what we can call "discordant humor." I have often got myself into positions where I wouldn't be able to cognise a humorous position. It would deprive me from the transients of happiness related to the event or maybe keep me wondering and consoling the subject matter of fun. This discordance maybe described as anhedonia in the psychology verbiage. Overtime , I realised that it is more of discordance than a aberrant state of mind and hence proceeded to elaborate this perspective.
Factors contributing to discordant humor have been studied by many psychologist under different cultural environment. Ability to understand appears to the primary souce of error. They could be due to the following
A. Differing Frames of Reference:
   1. Education shapes our understanding of the world. People with different educational experiences will have varying knowledge bases, which influence what they find funny.
   2. A joke relying on advanced scientific concepts might be hilarious to someone with a science background but confusing to someone without. This is very common especially among professional ( I have the personal experience of doctors) who otherwise have a cliche attitude towards most things.
   3. Conversely, humor rooted in everyday experiences or practical skills might resonate more with those who have less formal education.

B. Vocabulary and Language:
   1. Educational disparities can lead to differences in vocabulary and language usage. Such discordance also becomes the way to humiliation and isolation.
   2. Sophisticated wordplay or puns might be appreciated by those with a strong linguistic background, while simpler, more direct humor might be preferred by others.
   3. Sarcasm and irony, which rely on nuanced language understanding, can easily be misinterpreted.

 C. Cultural and social contextual error-
Education often exposes individuals to different cultural and social perspectives. Humor that relies on specific cultural references or social norms might not translate well between people with diverse educational backgrounds. What is considered acceptable or funny can vary significantly across different social groups.

 D. Abstract vs. concrete thinking discordance:
Higher education often encourages abstract thinking and the ability to grasp complex concepts. This can lead to a preference for intellectual humor, satire, or philosophical jokes. Individuals with less formal education might gravitate towards more concrete, straightforward humor, such as slapstick or observational comedy.

Potential consequences of discordant humor may often be grievous. To me, it certainly represents dis-humor and capable of causing great harm to somebody unknowingly. The suggested reasons maybe listed as follows-

a) Misunderstandings: Jokes can fall flat or be misinterpreted, leading to awkwardness or even offense.
b) Social Discomfort: Differences in humor can create a sense of disconnect and make it difficult for people to connect.
c) Reinforcement of Stereotypes: Humor can inadvertently reinforce stereotypes about different educational groups.

Bridging the Gap:
1] Empathy and Sensitivity: Being mindful of others' backgrounds and perspectives is crucial.
2] Clear Communication: Avoiding overly complex language or obscure references can help ensure that everyone understands the humor.
3] Finding Common Ground: Focusing on universal themes, such as human nature or shared experiences, can create humor that resonates with everyone.
4] Willingness to Explain: if a joke is misunderstood, being willing to explain it in a respectful way can help to bridge the gap.
In essence, discordant humor arises from the diverse lenses through which people view the world, shaped significantly by their educational journeys.

  1. This particular topic has intrigued me since childhood.
Whom or what do we laugh about?

Laughter of any flavour, truly has a victim at its core. The purpose of laughter is an evolutionary bug , successful in thriving in a social context alone.

This is the psychological aspects of discordant humor , resulting in laughter and the sense of feeling good. It also proposes the point of view - why we should laugh less.
